……when you manage your thoughts.
The old saying goes “A girl can dream can’t she?” I’ll be the first to admit I do. With this in mind, I highly recommend you consider your career dreams as well and what it takes to make them come true. The image above of yours truly on the beach in the Dominican Republic was a dream that began with a thought. The company you work for was once a thought. Every social media platform we use today started as a thought. Thoughts are so powerful that every day yours are either working for you or against you along your path to professional success.
Please consider the following points to make your career dreams a reality.
Point #1: Don’t underestimate your thoughts. Your current career reality (and mine) is a result of collective thoughts over time. If you desire change in any area of your life, the best place to start is by changing your thoughts. I found an article that states we have at least 12,000 thoughts/day and 80% of them are negative. I don’t know about you, but I’m spending more time in the section of my thoughts where the positive 20% hang out! Unfortunately we don’t always get what we want but consequently, we produce what we believe.
Point #2: Command your thoughts. When negative thoughts appear, you have to check them and replace them. Did you know there’s a fine line between fact and self-sabotage with settling somewhere stuffed in the middle? It looks like this: “I haven’t completed my Masters so they’ll probably choose someone else”. “I don’t have the experience so I’ll apply for this role instead since I know the job.” While you may not have the degree or the experience, you can obtain both. I am a living testimony that transferable skills open career doors when you lack the education and field experience. Instead of talking yourself out of your dreams, tell yourself “I’m committed to excelling professionally and am highly qualified for my next role” without settling for less than you deserve.
Point #3: Information is the new currency. With this in mind, you need information (capital) to make your dreams come true. I’ve purchased (and read) more books in the past 36 months than I did my entire retail career which was 18 years!! Ask yourself, “What information am I missing that’s hindering goal achievement?’ Find a podcast, a person, videos, subscribe to relevant newsletters, attend conferences, webinars, workshops, read articles- close the gap, then consume and apply the information you need.
I’m making my professional dreams come true so I hope you’ll join me. There’s enough room for all of us, but it won’t happen if all we do is dream, never making the necessary changes and resisting actions that align with our goals.
