Over the weekend, I met a friend for breakfast. As we discussed business, life and laughed about “family drama”, we devoured a delicious meal followed by continuous conversation. While walking our breakfast off, the conversation led to a mutual moment of confession. “I need to work out more.” Wouldn’t you know, we belong to the same gym and never see each other???? Just to be clear, it’s not because we’re missing one another – it’s because neither one of us are going to the gym! Because we’re both coaches, we stopped walking, discussed action steps and agreed upon execution. That Saturday morning conversation led to a commitment: working out Monday-Friday at 5:15am and something we both needed – accountability.
The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) did a study on accountability and found that you have a 65% of completing a goal if you commit to someone; AND if you have a specific accountability appointment with a person you’ve committed, you will increase your chance of success by up to 95%!!!
